ABOUT SHANIA
Rooted In Service
Shania Bennett’s commitment to Philadelphia began at a young age. Born and raised in the city, she grew up in a family where service has always been a way of life. The daughter of a Reverend, Shania was raised in a home grounded in faith, community, and a deep responsibility to others. Her father is an Army veteran who proudly served for 25 years as a municipal guard and District Council 33 city worker. Her three siblings have followed their own paths of service, with two serving as Philadelphia police officers and another building a career in the medical field continuing the family’s tradition of protecting, serving, strengthening, and providing care to their community.Â
Growing up surrounded by faith leaders, city workers, and law enforcement officers gave Shania an early appreciation for the many forms that public service can take. She saw firsthand that serving a community is not limited to holding elected office. It can mean caring for people’s spiritual needs, keeping a community safe, showing up for your neighbors, or doing the everyday work that keeps a city moving.Â
WHEN A CITY INVESTS IN A CHILD
A FIGHT WORTH FIGHTING FOR
For Shania, some fights are too important to walk away from. When the people you serve are facing a fight, you show up and fight alongside them. That principle has shaped Shania Bennett’s life and her commitment to Philadelphia. Despite the opportunities that have shaped her path to success, she is no stranger to the challenges faced by everyday Philadelphians. Her journey has been shaped by moments of loss, resilience, and a determination to turn those experiences into action.
That conviction first took shape through her experiences with gun violence and the loss of multiple peers and a sibling. Rather than allowing grief to define her, she chose to build something from it. In 2017, she founded Reach4Peace, a youth-led nonviolence initiative providing mentorship, basketball programming, community events, and scholarships to young people impacted by violence.
Her commitment to fighting for her community eventually led her into public service. Through her work with State Representative Jordan Harris and State Senator Nikil Saval, she learned how community concerns could be translated into meaningful action, gaining firsthand experience providing constituent services, engaging residents, and helping people navigate government and legislative resources.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Shania served as a Neighborhood Advisory Coordinator with the City of Philadelphia’s Division of Housing and Community Development, working directly with residents facing financial hardship and the threat of losing their homes. She helped connect families with foreclosure diversion, housing preservation, rental assistance, and other critical resources. That experience reinforced for her that housing is about stability, dignity, and the ability for families to put down roots and build a future in the communities they call home for generations.Â
BUILT TO SERVE
Shania Bennett’s life has been defined by a willingness to step forward, take responsibility, and serve. At every stage of her life, when Shania could have chosen a different path, time and time again she chose service.Â
From becoming a community advocate and founding Reach4Peace to serving as an elected committee person, working in legislative offices, and most recently serving as an appointed Director in The Philadelphia Mayor’s Office. Shania has consistently chosen opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others.Â
Her experiences have allowed her to see Philadelphia from many perspectives as a neighbor, advocate, public servant, organizer and city leader. Through each, she has learned that leadership means showing up, listening, and doing the work.Â
